As a woman in technology for 15 years or so (don't make me divulge my age!), it's disheartening to me that so many women are missing out on the amazing opportunities that computer technology offers us to advance our careers, our families, and ourselves.

I promise you that EVERYONE - including YOU! - can learn to put these modern marvels to good use. All you need is the right learning environment. An environment where no question is a silly one, and where you can touch any part of the computer you want without messing anything up.

I believe that getting your hands dirty is sometimes the best way to learn, so we start our Computer Basics for Women class by taking apart computers. That's right - you read it correctly. You'll work with my demonstration computers and learn just what's inside, and what each component does.

You'll practice adding and removing physical components until you're confident working with your hands inside a computer.

Then we'll boot up our laptop PC's (if you have one - and it's perfectly fine if you don't!) and learn what those pesky programs are that start every time you boot up. Learn to figure out which ones you need, and how to put the ones you don't need on a back burner - or get rid of them altogether.

We'll then graduate to securing our machines and even giving them a "tune-up" to help them run a little smoother. We'll talk about viruses, spyware, internet cookies (no chocolate chips here), and even some of the common software we use (or could be using) every day.

Question-and-Answer time is abundant in this class, so bring your specific questions - but please keep them geared toward a basic class for beginners and novices. We wouldn't want to make everyone wait while we discuss advanced networking strategies, for instance.
